Designed to repair and restore a damaged tooth, fillings are used to ‘fill in’ a cavity or caries that has developed. Cavities can develop for a variety of reasons, although the most common is tooth decay. During the treatment, we will clean and irrigate the area being treated before removing the decayed parts of the tooth. We’ll then use the filling material to build in the gap and prevent any further decay from occurring.
Modern fillings are most often made from a composite resin material that has a tooth-coloured finish and can be shade-matched to the patient’s teeth. This provides a subtle, almost seamless finish for the patient, and means no one will even know you’ve had a filling placed. Composite fillings are also bonded in place, which can help strengthen the tooth in question, providing further protection in the long term.
In some situations, however, there may be clinical indications that other filling materials may be more suitable and all such decisions are made on a case-by-case basis.
